Characteristics of a Psychopath

A psychopath will use people for excitement, entertainment, to build their self-esteem and they invariably value people in terms of their material value (e.g. money, property, comfort, etc..). They can involve and get other people into trouble quickly and they seem to have no regret for their actions. To date there is no checklist of behavior and symptoms that will tell you with certainty whether or not a person is a psychopath. But there are warning signs. The following warning signs are based on my experience but primarily research conducted by Robert Hare, Ph.D - the leading expert on the Psychopathic Personality.

Characteristics of a Psychopath

superficial charm

self-centered & self-important

need for stimulation & prone to boredom

deceptive behavior & lying

conning & manipulative

little remorse or guilt

shallow emotional response

callous with a lack of empathy

living off others or predatory attitude

poor self-control

promiscuous sexual behavior

early behavioral problems

lack of realistic long term goals

impulsive lifestyle

irresponsible behavior

blaming others for their actions

short term relationships

juvenile delinquency

breaking parole or probation

varied criminal activity

The idea that psychopaths eat people is a myth. In reality, a person with a psychopathic personality can lead what appears to be an ordinary life. They can have jobs, get married and they can break the law like anyone else. But their jobs and marriages usually dont last and their life is usually on the verge of personal chaos. They are almost always in some kind of trouble or they are not far from it.

A psychopath is usually a subtle manipulator. They do this by playing to the emotions of others. They typically have high verbal intelligence, but they lack what is commonly referred to as "emotional intelligence". There is always a shallow quality to the emotional aspect of their stories. In particular they have difficulty describing how they felt, why they felt that way, or how others may feel and why. In many cases you almost have to explain it to them. Close friends and parents will often end up explaining to the psychopath how they feel and how others feel who have been hurt by him or her. They can do this over and over with no significant change in the person's choices and behavior. They don't understand or appreciate the impact that their behavior has on others. They do appreciate what it means when they are caught breaking rules or the law even though they seem to end up in trouble again. They desperately avoid incarceration and loss of freedom but continue to act as if they can get away with breaking the rules. They don't learn from these consequences. They seem to react with feelings and regret when they are caught. But their regret is not so much for other people as it is for the consequences that their behavior has had on them, their freedom, their resources and their so called "friends." They can be very sad for their self. A psychopath is always in it for their self even when it seems like they are caring for and helping others. The definition of their "friends" are people who support the psychopath and protect them from the consequence of their own antisocial behavior. Shallow friendships, low emotional intelligence, using people, antisocial attitudes and failure to learn from the repeated consequences of their choices and actions help identify the psychopath.

Forum: General Discussion / Off Topic

Eight things you should know about...

I found this article great as I am shooting a calendar this weekend for American Muscle. - Joe

Eight things you should know about...

Shooting the Automotion Calendar

by Dan Lippitt, as told to Ryan Pretzer

An official Pistons photographer since 1991, Dan Lippitt knows his way around The Palace. He has coordinated the photo shoot for all eight Automotion calendars. Good gig, right? Only if youre willing to put in the work.
You do not say, show me sexy. My directions are pretty simple while shooting. Ill say things like, smile or bigger smile. With the ladies who havent done a shoot before Ill talk to them beforehand about how to pose or make a facial expression so they know what Im looking for.
New members are not camera shy. The ladies are all excited to do it. To be on Automotion, you have to enjoy being in the spotlight and dancing. That said, everyone gets a little nervous when you shoot because everyone wants to do well. They want to make (dance team director Rebecca Girard) happy, they want to make me happy. They want to have a good picture in the calendar.
Theres no flirting. When Im working with a professional model, if you say laugh, shell laugh and it will look real. When youre working with Automotion, you have to make a good joke or say something funny because theyre not used to being directed like that. So I will joke with the ladies, especially before they shoot. But I definitely wouldnt call it flirting.

Its a long day. The team members wont know what order theyre shooting in, so theyll get there at 9 in the morning and may not shoot until 6 at night. Hair and makeup take hours, then we have to check lighting and well look at using accessories and things like that. I work with each of them for no less than 30 minutes, and up to an hour.
Each lady deserves everything you have. I dont jump around shooting like crazy, but it takes a lot of energy mentally. You have to conceive each shot to its fullest - working with Rebecca on matching the lighting to the swimsuit and the backdrop - to make everyone on Automotion look her best. My assistants, Christian OGrady and Justin Dennis, and I set up 34 different lighting arrangements so that every member had at least one lighting scenario none of their teammates had. Its mentally exhausting to come up with that in two days.
It doesnt come together overnight. The shoot itself takes 2-3 days. Then I have to whittle 10,000 shots down to 1,500 and then 750 shots. I go over those with Rebecca, one by one, to find the 63 images that end up in the calendar. Each of those shots receives 2-3 hours of post-production work. But were talking about young, pretty women so its not like they need a lot of work. I just need to be careful about doing it right.
Two minds are better than one. Rebecca brings a different take to looking at the photos. Im looking at the technical aspects, like the lighting or how the pose turned out. Rebecca is more concerned with how the ladies look overall - how the swimsuits work, their expressions. At times we have differences of opinion because when it comes down to it, it is just a matter of opinion. Some people may like a smile while others like a seductive pose. So when we both like it, we know its a keeper.
This job is as fun as it looks. My job is ridiculously fun as it is - I shoot basketball players and pretty women and famous people. Yeah, its fun. Is it fun to shoot eight ladies in one day? Eh, not so much.
The 2009 Automotion calendar goes on sale online at The Palace Locker Room Store Nov. 29. All proceeds will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan.

Forum: Photography 101 - Articles Lessons and Tips

Twilight & Beyond

One of the things I love about photography; when I am out shooting, I spend most of my time thinking about composition, the light, my surroundings, etc. that I tend to turn off any thing else pressing for a while. There is a lot going on with a family member's health; I needed to get it off my mind for at a couple of hours tonight...

I headed into Philadelphia; hoping to get some of the moon rise over the skyline along with some twilight shots.

Here a few from the outing.

Your thoughts and comments are appreciated.

Thanks in advance - H

"Twilight At Boathouse Row"
A700 & 50/1.7
f/5.6, 1.3s, 50mm, ISO 200

"Liberty I & II"
A700 & Beercan
f/6.3, 0.8s, 135mm, ISO 200

"Comcast I" or...
A700 & Beercan
f/6.3, 0.6s, 210mm, ISO 200

"Comcast II"

Forum: Landscape Photography
